How do I take care of a lip piercing?

The general rule of aftercare is good overall health, i.e., a healthy immune system and excellent hygiene. Lip piercings are a bit trickier than other piercings when it comes to aftercare. As one side of your jewelry is located inside your mouth, you have to use a solution that can be taken orally. You never swallow the solution, but you should still purchase a recovery liquid that is not harmful in any way.

The healing time is usually 6-8 weeks, but it can take up to 3 or 6 months for it to heal. There are a couple of things you should do to help the healing process to avoid infection. Use a product, like our Care X-Pressions Spray spray to rinse your lips outside 3 times a day.

What should I replace the backing of lip jewelry with?

When choosing to get a lip piercing, you have to be cautious of the fact that the back of your labret will most likely be touching your teeth and gums. This can result in complications in your oral health over time, therefore make sure to choose a piece that is the least harmful. Flexible and soft materials, such as PTFE, will do less damage than titanium or surgical steel jewelry. Labret studs with PTFE backings make for fantastic starter items. Make sure to get the right length, as your starter jewelry has to be longer than the one you are going to wear later.

If you would like a labret made of PTFE, you can browse our section of PTFE labrets. You’ll find them in different sizes.

How long do I have to wait before changing my jewelry in my lip piercing?

Prematurely changing it can cause complications and unwanted side effects. Make sure that it is 100% healed before switching to a new design. If you are not sure about the state of your piercing, it is probably not adequately healed yet. You can also go back to your piercer and ask for advice.
Follow the required aftercare routine and wait for at least 3 to 6 months before changing your lip jewelry.

How are lip piercings done?

A professional piercer should do your lip piercing. You can choose your starter jewelry, which is usually a titanium stud. Studs are the best when it comes to healing, and as soon you are healed, you can change to your desired style. Hoops and lip rings are not ideal to start with because they move around a lot on their own. However, if you do choose a lip ring as your first jewelry, go for a bigger size.

The actual process will look like this:

1. You will choose a placement

2. The piercer will sanitize the area around your mouth

3. The piercer will use a clamp to hold your lip steady

4. A puncture will be made using a sterile needle

5. The jewelry will be inserted

6. The area will be cleaned one more time

Take good care of it, and enjoy your brand new lip jewelry!
