The general rule of aftercare is good overall health, i.e., a healthy immune system and excellent hygiene. Lip piercings are a bit trickier than other piercings when it comes to aftercare. As one side of your jewelry is located inside your mouth, you have to use a solution that can be taken orally. You never swallow the solution, but you should still purchase a recovery liquid that is not harmful in any way.

When choosing to get a lip piercing, you have to be cautious of the fact that the back of your labret will most likely be touching your teeth and gums. This can result in complications in your oral health over time, therefore make sure to choose a piece that is the least harmful. Flexible and soft materials, such as PTFE, will do less damage than titanium or surgical steel jewelry. Labret studs with PTFE backings make for fantastic starter items. Make sure to get the right length, as your starter jewelry has to be longer than the one you are going to wear later.

Prematurely changing it can cause complications and unwanted side effects. Make sure that it is 100% healed before switching to a new design. If you are not sure about the state of your piercing, it is probably not adequately healed yet. You can also go back to your piercer and ask for advice.
