Piercing Jewelry Materials

Exploring PTFE Piercing Jewelry: Composition, Versatility, and Best Practices

PTFE is short for Polytetrafluoroethylene, also known as Teflon. This material was invented by accident in 1938. Since then, it has been used for medical applications, among other things. For about 20 years, PTFE has been widely used in piercings.

What are the benefits of PTFE?

There are many advantages to using PTFE for piercing jewelry compared to surgical steel or titanium, for example.

  • PTFE is incredibly flexible and will follow the shape and movement of the body.
  • It’s an ideal material if you play sports.
  • There is no nickel in PTFE, so you can use it without hesitation if you suffer from a nickel allergy.
  • You can leave your PTFE jewelry in your body during medical procedures. It’s a safe material for x-rays, CT- and MRI scans, as well as dental visits.

Those are quite a few benefits, right?

And there’s more!

  • You can cut the jewelry to any desired length that will fit your piercing.
  • If you are pregnant, you can use PTFE jewelry because the material will adjust its form to your belly. Do make sure that the rod is long enough though. Check out our belly button piercing pieces in PTFE for pregnant women.
  • It can be autoclaved, so the jewelry is sterile when put in the body.
  • It’s safe to use in newly made piercings.
  • It is a lightweight material.

Overall, there are no disadvantages to using PTFE

How do I cut my PTFE jewelry to fit my piercing?

You can easily shorten your PTFE piercing jewelry. All it takes is a pair of scissors to trim the rod. After cutting it to your desired length, use a metal ball with internal thread and screw it into the newly shortened PTFE rod. This will create a thread into the PTFE rod. Then you can screw any other internally threaded ball into it!
